How to choose a savings account
Quick guide for India
What to prioritise
- Interest rate vs how much you actually keep in the account
- Average monthly balance (AMB) / minimum balance you can maintain
- Hidden charges: SMS, debit card, non-maintenance, ATM beyond free limit
- Digital features: UPI, app quality, net banking (India)
- Branch / ATM access if you need cash often
- DICGC deposit insurance limits
Interest rate vs APY
Indian banks quote savings interest as % p.a., usually calculated on daily balances and credited quarterly. Compounding and slab structures mean realised yield can differ slightly from the headline rate. Always check the bank’s interest rate circular.
Fees to watch
- Monthly maintenance / non-maintenance of AMB
- Other-bank ATM withdrawals beyond free quota
- Debit card annual fee, cheque book, SMS packs
- Minimum balance penalties that erase interest gains
Frequently asked questions
Is my savings account money insured in India? ▾
Deposits with commercial banks are covered by DICGC up to ₹5 lakh per depositor per bank (principal + interest), subject to scheme rules. Verify current limits with RBI/DICGC.
What is AMB (Average Monthly Balance)? ▾
AMB is the average of end-of-day balances over a month. Many Indian banks require a minimum AMB; falling short can trigger non-maintenance charges that wipe out interest.
Why do small finance / digital banks show higher rates? ▾
They often use tiered rates that pay more only above certain balances, or run competitive pricing to grow deposits. Always match the tier to your real balance.
Should I pick the highest interest account only? ▾
Not always. Factor AMB you can maintain, ATM needs, app quality, customer service, and salary-account bundling. A slightly lower rate with zero penalty risk can win net.
